Good morning!  This page is intended to both serve as a continuing worship option for those participating in our worship service from home, and to serve in place of print resources during our in-person worship.  Following the worship service on Sunday, one or more video recordings from the service will be placed on this page, including the sermon.  This may take several hours, due to the time needed to process the videos.  We will email the congregation when the recordings have been posted.  If you would like to be added to our congregational email list, please contact pvcob.alive@gmail.com.

  • Pastors Daniel and Rebecca will be on vacation this week. Next week our District Executive, John Jantzi, will be coming to share the message with us.
  • Offering Envelopes for 2021 have arrived and are now available for pick up in the Narthex.
  • Today is the last day to drop off paper, cleaning, and health care items for Valley Mission. They will be delivered this week.

A child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
The light shines in the darkness.
And the darkness cannot overcome it.
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
God’s compassion has been given breath, voice, and song.

On This Day Earth Shall Ring

Verse 1:

On this day earth shall ring
with the song children sing
to the Lord, Christ our King,
born on earth to save us;
him the Father gave us.

Verse 2:

His the doom, ours the mirth;
when he came down to earth,
Bethlehem saw his birth;
ox and ass beside him
from the cold would hide him.

Verse 3:

God’s bright star, o’er his head,
Wise Men three to him led;
kneel they low by his bed,
lay their gifts before him,
praise him and adore him.

On this day angels sing;
with their song earth shall ring,
praising Christ, heaven’s King,
born on earth to save us;
peace and love he gave us.

Luke 2: 25-35 NRSV

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,

‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,
according to your word;
for my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel.’

And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’

Some Children See Him

Verse 1

Some children see Him lily white,
The Baby Jesus born this night.
Some children see Him lily white,
With tresses soft and fair.

Some children see Him bronzed and brown,
The Lord o heav’n to earth come down;
Some children see Him bronzed and brown,
With dark and heavy hair.

Verse 2

Some children see Him almond eyed,
This Savior whom we kneel beside,
Some children see Him almond eyed,
With skin of yellow hue.

Some children see Him dark as they,
Sweet Mary’s Son to whom we pray;
Some children see Him dark as they,
And ah! They love Him too!

Verse 3

The children in each different place will see
the Baby Jesus face____
like theirs, but bright with heav’nly grace,
And filled with holy light.

O lay aside each earthly thing,
And with thy heart as offering,
Come worship now thee Infant King,
‘Tis love that’s born tonight!

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’ Listen! Your sentinels lift up their voices, together they sing for joy; for in plain sight they see the return of the Lord to Zion. Break forth together into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem; for the Lord has comforted his people, he has redeemed Jerusalem. The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

We gather in the promise that God is with us. God has blessed us from the beginning of creation to each day that is still yet to come. In grace God reaches out through the fruitfulness of the earth and the compassion of human hearts, and especially through the ministry and service of the tiny babe of Bethlehem who invites us each to the final celebration of love. Let us celebrate today, sharing in love, giving in hope, seeking the fulfillment of God’s vision among us.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our collections this year for Western State Hospital and Valley Mission. These organizations serve those who are often neglected and forgotten in our world. They are also ones whom Jesus has reminded are our brothers and sisters, and that to forget them, is like forgetting him. May God bless those who will receive, and be served by, these gifts.Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our collections this year for Western State Hospital and Valley Mission. Most holy and Amazing God,
We spend so much of our days trying to float above the troubles of this world
Our jobs are never done, and we gasp for a moment of rest,
Then fill our breaks with busyness as well.
We paddle like mad, trying to keep up, trying to stay on top.
Only to witness your abandoning a throne above all things
To come down to earth, to come into our chaos and craziness
Not reigning from on high, but vulnerable as a child,
born, not even into comfort and cleanliness and safety,
But born in a barn, only a pile of hay to serve as a bed.
You have come to be with us,
To remind us that our struggle to be on top of everything is not what will bring us peace.

Help us to trust in you, O God.
Help us to follow simply.
Help us to love without perfection.
To believe that our neighbors do not demand perfection from us
To believe that grace is given for our struggle
To believe that love really is all around.

May we let love become the breath than sustains us
That washes the stress and exhaustion from our chests
That gives us room to welcome others
To not be inconvenienced, or feel judged
But to simply be with each other
Brothers and sisters in you.

Heal the damage that our hurried lives have caused.
Give us the humility and courage to ask for reconciliation
to acknowledge and accept our past mistakes.
Prepare us to receive those who have wounded us in the past
to allow each person to be a part of your new creation.

Lord, we desire to worship at your throne,
So help us to see it in the stool of the grocery clerk.
Help us to recognize it in the seat of the Fed-Ex truck.
May the mechanic and professor, and retiree be recipients of our love for you.

Because you have entered in.
You have come to love and heal.
You have taught and embraced.
You have accepted pain, suffering, and rejection for us.
May we take our seats in the straw with you. Amen.

Hungry

Verse 1

Hungry I come to You
For I know You satisfy
I am empty but I know
Your love does not run dry

Chorus

So I wait for You
So I wait for You
I’ve fallen on my knees
Offering all my needs
Jesus You’re all
This heart is living for

Verse 2

Broken I run to You
For Your arms are open wide
I am weary but I know Your touch

Restores my life

Chorus

So I wait for You
So I wait for You
I’ve fallen on my knees
Offering all my needs
Jesus You’re all
This heart is living for

We wait,
but God is already with us.

We hurt,
but God is already embracing us.

We seek,
but God has already found us.

Let us go,
knowing the presence
and love of God.

Amen.
