Our History…

The Pleasant Valley Church congregation can trace its history to the building of its first church at Weyers Cave in 1824 and through the interesting experiences of the Brick Church Congregation (Middle River Congregation) to the first Brethren settlement in Augusta County in 1790.

Our Mission…

By His grace, the Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren proclaims God as Loving Father, Jesus Christ as Eternal Savior, and the Holy Spirit as Constant Guide. With love and humility we celebrate a life-long relationship with Christ as we share the Good News of His salvation.

Our Practices…

The Church of the Brethren emphasizes living out faith through specific practices that reflect the teachings and actions of Jesus Christ. Here is a brief overview of these core practices:

  1. Baptism: Adults make a deliberate commitment to follow Jesus, symbolized by kneeling and being immersed three times forward in water, representing a cleansing and rebirth into a life of belief and service.

  2. Love Feast and Communion: A communal meal that includes feetwashing, a fellowship meal, and the sharing of bread and cup, commemorating Jesus’ last supper and fostering unity among believers.brethren.org

  3. Feetwashing: Following Jesus’ example of humility and service, members wash each other’s feet during the love feast, symbolizing mutual love and equality.

  4. Anointing: A ritual of prayer and laying on of hands with oil, seeking physical, emotional, or spiritual healing, and entrusting individuals to God’s care.

These practices are central to the Brethren’s faith, guiding members to pattern their lives after Jesus and experience God’s presence collectively.
