Bulletin

Good morning!  This page is intended to both serve as a continuing worship option for those participating in our worship service from home, and to serve in place of print resources during our in-person worship.  Following the worship service on Sunday, one or more video recordings from the service will be placed on this page, including the sermon.  This may take several hours, due to the time needed to process the videos.  We will email the congregation when the recordings have been posted.  If you would like to be added to our congregational email list, please contact pvcob.alive@gmail.com.

  • Please note these highlights from the September 30 Church Board Meeting:
    1. We will continue worshiping outdoors through October 11.
    2. This will include our Fall Congregational Business meeting on October 11.
    3. We will not be accepting reservations for use of the church building or pavilion during this time, due to sanitation concerns.
  • Thank you to Valerie Mongold, who will be filling in as temporary office staff for the rest of September.
  • Please be praying for educators, students, and parents preparing for the new school year.
  • Please be praying for those suffering from Covid-19, and those caring for them.
  • Please pray for those suffering from other illnesses during this time.

Lord, Whose Love
Through Humble Service

Lord whose love through humble service
Bore the weight of human need,
Who upon the cross forsaken
Offered mercy’s perfect deed:
We, your servants, bring the worship
Not of voice alone, but heart,
Consecrating to your purpose
Ev’ry gift which you impart.

As we worship, grant us vision,
Till your love’s revealing light
In its height and depth and greatness
Dawns upon our quicken sight,
Making known the needs and burdens
Your compassion bids us bear,
Stirring us to tireless striving
Your abundant life to share.

Called by worship to your service,
Forth in your dear, name we go,
To the child, the youth, the aged,
Love in living deeds to show;
Hope and health, good will and comfort,
Counsel, aid, and peace we give,
That your children, Lord, in freedom,
May your mercy know, and live.

Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service

by David Tate, Jeremiah Padilla | Streamed with permission. CSPL121366

Holy God,
From the very beginning,
Your Word has moved over the the earth
in the earth
and through the earth.
Your Word has ordered the heavens
and brought life to land and seas.
Your Word is the lamp to our feet
and the light to our path.
So we pray that You would be our revealer today.
Give us understanding, so that we can walk well in your ways.
Turn our hearts to your promise
So we will not stray from your goodness.
Teach us the joy of your love
So that we can celebrate with you:
Serving our neighbor,
Honoring your generosity,
Sowing your peace.
By your Living Word we pray, Amen.

Romans 13:8-14
Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet’; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.
Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Cornerstone

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.

(REPEAT)

Chorus
Christ alone, cornerstone.
Weak made strong in the Saviour’s love.
Through the storm, He is Lord;
Lord of all!

When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
My anchor holds within the veil.

Chorus

Cornerstone

In the twelfth century, Francis of Assisi, was a young man, born into wealth and privilege, who after an illness and imprisonment, began to realize the emptiness of his previous life. He turned to a life of simplicity and prayer, and Jesus spoke to him, instructing Francis to “rebuild his church.” Francis took this literally, rebuilding church buildings and chapels around Italy, but along the way demonstrated a life of love and service that was an inspiration to many, and led to the development of the Franciscan order. Francis’s preaching led to a new faithfulness in the church and a new commitment to living and sharing the gospel of Jesus.

This prayer is attributed to Saint Francis, and is full of the heart of a life built with Jesus as the true cornerstone.

Prayer of Saint Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

God equips and calls each of us in our own way, and in our own gifts. He gives to each one, as the Spirit chooses. It is not accident. Let us each give and serve, knowing that what God has entrusted us with, is for the purpose of the strengthening of the church in Christ’s ministry of love.

God of all creation,
Who spoke stars and oceans into being
Who wrote love as the law of the universe,
We praise you today, in all the glories that you have opened to us.
We thank you, O God, for the simple joy of children;
For the ways they laugh,
For the honesty of their tears,
For the trust they freely give.
Help us to remember that we are your children, and that we can be so honest and trusting with you.
Forgive us, Lord, when we live out of distrust and fear.
Forgive us for the ways that we, as humans, are so ugly with each other.
Help us to gain the courage and wisdom to learn the ways of grace and mercy,
which can be new to us, but which you have been teaching forever.
Turn our division into confession, and allow us to be one in you once more.
We pray for the hurts of our brothers and sisters today.
We pray for our own ignorance and misunderstanding.
We pray for your Holy Spirit to translate between us, and to allow us to work for the love of each other and you once again.
For you are the one who provides bread and breath.
You are the one who knows the waters of creation, birth, and rebirth,
And we would be yours in every day. Amen.

Only Hope

There’s a song inside of my soul.
It’s the one that I’ve tried to write over and over again.
I’m awake in this infinite cold.
But You sing to me over and over and over again.

Chorus:
So I lay my head back down.
And I lift my hands
and pray to be only Yours.
I pray to be only Yours.
I know now, You’re my only hope.

Sing to me of the song of the stars;
Of Your galaxy laughing and laughing and laughing again.
When You feel like my dreams are so far,
Sing to me of the plans that You have for me over again.

Chorus

I give You my apathy.
I’m giving You all of me.
I want Your symphony
Singing in all that I am.
At the top of my lungs, I’m giving it back.

Chorus

Only Hope

And now, may the Lord Jesus Christ
protect you and lead you.

May Jesus secure your heart,
from temptation without
and poison within.

May you belong
more and more to God,
in every day.

Amen.
