Good morning!  This page is intended to both serve as a continuing worship option for those participating in our worship service from home, and to serve in place of print resources during our in-person worship.  Following the worship service on Sunday, one or more video recordings from the service will be placed on this page, including the sermon.  This may take several hours, due to the time needed to process the videos.  We will email the congregation when the recordings have been posted.  If you would like to be added to our congregational email list, please contact pvcob.alive@gmail.com.

Notes and Reminders

The Church Board has approved a plan for safely worshiping in our church building during the Covid-19 pandemic. Please review this plan and be diligent in observing the precautions laid out. https://pleasantvalleyalive.org/wp/guidelines-for-indoor-worship/

Please also remember that we have begun our annual collection for the patients at Western State Hospital. This collection includes everything from essentials to fun items. It is our hope that our collection will be a sharing of Christ’s love for them in the Christmas season. A list of items for the collection can be viewed at https://pleasantvalleyalive.org/wp/western-state-christmas-collection/ .

November is also the time for our annual Deacon Calling. The ministry of the deacon is treasured in our congregation. Deacons serve as caregivers, watching over the congregation, seeking to minister to needs that may arise, and representing God’s love for all. This is an especially important ministry during the challenges that have been presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. Please be prayerfully considering who we should call to serve, and also be prayerfully considering whether this might be a ministry that God is calling you to be a part of.

Please also note this change in our worship plans. Last week I shared that on November 8 we would be participating in a pre-recorded service of worship that I have been working on with other Shenandoah District leadership. Rebecca and I will be gone for vacation on November 22, but we have experienced some confusion in communication with the person who was going to be preaching that Sunday. So we have shuffled plans, and we will be participating in the District Service on the 22nd, instead of the 8th.

Backpack Pals distribution has resumed and is distributing over 100 bags a week. Packing is taking place on Tuesday evenings at 5:00 PM. Please call Barbara Glovier if you are interested in assisting.

The Church Board has decided to not accept reservations of the church building through the end of 2020.

We are preparing for the Jimmy Fortune concert to move forward at a new location. The concert will be held at the Rockingham County Fairground Exhibit building, in order to allow for much greater social distancing. Tickets are available to purchase online, or by calling the Rockingham County Fair office, (540) 434-0005. More information is available at https://pleasantvalleyalive.org/wp/an-evening-with-jimmy-fortune/ .

Amazing Grace

by Jeremiah Padilla | Streamed with permission. CSPL121366

Reading adapted from Matthew 11 and Isaiah 55

Come to the water, all you who thirst.

Come all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens,

All of you without money, come now, buy and eat.

Take Christ’s yoke upon you, and learn from him.

Listen carefully and receive what is good, The Lord is gentle and humble in heart,
so you will find rest for your souls.

Incline your ear, and come; listen, so that you may live.

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so is the word from God’s mouth; it shall not return empty, but it shall accomplish God’s purpose, and succeed in the thing for which it was sent.

And we will go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills
shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

All Glory, Laud, and Honor

Chorus:
All glory, laud, and honor
to thee, Redeemer, King,
to whom the lips of children
made sweet hosannas ring.

Thou art the King of Israel
and David’s royal Son,
who in the Lord’s name comest,
the King and blessed one.

Chorus

The company of angels
is praising thee on high,
and we, with all creation,
in chorus make reply.

Chorus

The people of the Hebrews
with palms before thee went;
our praise and prayer and anthems
before thee we present.

Chorus

Spirit of God
As we gather this morning
You have shown us the power of your love
and the strength of your grace.
You gather us in to heal our affliction
and call us your children,
in a body of redeeming grace.
Fill us with your presence this morning.
Wash us clean and make us new;
Born in you, we rise to life:
To celebrate, serve and pray, to share your grace, to know your love.
Rise among us this morning, Amen.

1 Kings 19:1-10
Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ‘So may the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life like the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.’ Then he was afraid; he got up and fled for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah; he left his servant there.

But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: ‘It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.’ Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, ‘Get up and eat.’ He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, ‘Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.’ He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food for forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there.

Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ He answered, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.’

Praise You In This Storm

I was sure by now, God, You would have reached down, and wiped our tears away.  Stepped in and saved the day.  But once again I’ll say amen,
and it’s still rainin’.

Chorus:
As the thunder rolls, I barely hear You whisper through the rain.  I’m with You.  And as Your mercy falls, I’ll raise my hands and praise the God who gives and takes away.

And I’ll praise You in this storm, and I will lift my hands for You are who You are no matter where I am.  And ev’ry tear I’ve cried You hold in Your hand. You never left my side, and though my heart is torn,
I will praise You in this storm.

I remember when I stumbled in the wind.  You heard my cry to You, and raised me up again.
But my strength is almost gone, how can I carry on if I can’t find You?

Chorus

I lift my eyes unto the hills.  Where does my help come from?  My help comes from the Lord,
The Maker of heaven and earth.
(Repeat)

And I’ll praise You in this storm, and I will lift my hands for You are who You are no matter where I am.  And ev’ry tear I’ve cried You hold in Your hand.  You never left my side, and though my heart is torn, I will praise You in this storm.

Praise You in this Storm

by PVCoB Praise Team | Streamed with permission. CSPL121366

God, you are our inspiration and light.
you not only guide us in our paths,
you not only speak words of prophecy and inspiration into our hearts,
you not only call us to service and mercy,
but you give us strength as well.
You fill our spirits with fire
and our hearts with hope
as we long for your kingdom.
We thank you for your church,
commissioned by Jesus,
empowered by your Holy Spirit,
and responding to your faithfulness.
We thank you for every person who serves and shares in love,
who walks in your mercy,
and celebrates your compassion.
Grant us the joy of your presence,
that we may be bearers of that joy for all the world.
Take our hands in yours, and our hearts as well.
In Christ, we pray, Amen.

He Shall Feed His Flock

He shall feed his flock like
a shepherd; and He shall gather the lambs with his arm,
with his arm.
He shall feed his flock like
a shepherd; and He shall gather the lambs with his arm,
with his arm.
And carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead those that are with young, and gently lead those and gently lead those
that are with young.

Come unto Him, all ye that labour, come unto Him ye
that are heavy laden,
and He will give you rest.
Come unto Him, all ye that labour, come unto Him ye
that are heavy laden,
and He will give you rest.

Take his yoke upon you, and learn of Him, for He is meek
and lowly of heart, and ye shall find rest, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Take his yoke upon you, and learn of Him, for He is meek
and lowly of heart, and ye shall find rest, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

He Shall Feed His FLock

by David Tate, Jeremiah Padilla | Streamed with permission. CSPL121366

Now, may God be your peace.
The one who is our beginning
is also our end;
our strength in the wilderness
and our steadfast security at home.
Without God, we are not.
Go, trusting in God. Amen.
