Good morning!  This page is intended to both serve as a continuing worship option for those participating in our worship service from home, and to serve in place of print resources during our in-person worship.  Following the worship service on Sunday, one or more video recordings from the service will be placed on this page, including the sermon.  This may take several hours, due to the time needed to process the videos.  We will email the congregation when the recordings have been posted.  If you would like to be added to our congregational email list, please contact pvcob.alive@gmail.com.

Notes and Reminder

The Church Board will not be meeting this month, due to current Covid-19 restrictions. Any items that need to be addressed can be given to our Board Chair, Jon Garber, to be handled via email.

We will hold our February Congregational Business Meeting as a part of our worship service on February 14.  This will be a brief meeting, with a minimum of business presented.

The Shenandoah District February Disaster Ministries trip to Coastal, North Carolina has been canceled.  The next trip will be to Dayton, Ohio in April.

The Church Office is beginning preparations for publication of the 2021 Church Directory. If you have updates for the directory, please submit them to the church office as soon as possible. Updates can be emailed to office@pleasantvalleyalive.org, or you can call the office during office hours (Tuesday through Friday, 8:30AM -12:30 PM).

Please remember in your prayers the many in and around our congregation who have been fighting illness.

With the rising of the sun, we celebrate God’s generosity and power.

God’s voice speaks into the darkness, and awakens our hearts as well.

God said, “Let there be light.”

And light filled all of creation.

We hear the words addressing all creation, and we are drawn towards the the new day, ready for God’s beauty and blessing.

God separated the light from the shadows and saw that it was good. It was day, and it was night, and the sun rose to begin again.

Awaken us with your light, O God.
Fill us with your Spirit and inspire with your passionate and selfless love.
Shine your light through us, and make us part of your blessing.

Build Your Kingdom Here

Verse 1

Come set Your rule and reign
In our hearts again
Increase in us we pray
Unveil why we’re made
Come set our hearts ablaze with hope
Like wildfire in our very souls
Holy Spirit come invade us now
We are Your church
We need Your pow’r in us

Verse 2

We seek Your kingdom first
We hunger and we thirst
Refuse to waste our lives
For You’re our joy and prize
To see the captives’ hearts released
The hurt the sick the poor at peace
We lay down our lives for heaven’s cause
We are Your church
We pray revive this earth

Chorus

Build Your kingdom here
Let the darkness fear
Show Your mighty hand
Heal our streets and land
Set Your church on fire
Win this nation back
Change the atmosphere
Build Your kingdom here we pray

Verse 3

Unleash Your kingdom’s pow’r
Reaching the near and far
No force of hell can stop
Your beauty changing hearts
You made us for much more than this
Awake the kingdom seed in us
Fill us with the strength and love of Christ
We are Your church
We are the hope on earth

INVOCATION

Exodus 2: 11-22 NRSV

and the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, ‘There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very many flocks and herds; but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. He brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his meagre fare, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him. Now there came a traveller to the rich man, and he was loath to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man’s lamb, and prepared that for the guest who had come to him.’ Then David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan, ‘As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die; he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.’

Nathan said to David, ‘You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I anointed you king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul;

Only Hope

Verse 1

There’s a song that’s inside of my soul
It’s the one that I’ve tried to write
Over and over again
I’m awake in the infinite cold
But You sing to me over and over and over again

Chorus 1

I lay my head back down
And I lift my hands and pray to be only Yours
I pray to be only Yours
I know now You’re my only hope

Verse 2

Sing to me of the song of the stars
Of Your galaxy dancing and laughing
And laughing again
When it feel like my dreams are so far
Sing to me of the plans that You have for me
Over again

Chorus 2

I lay my head back down
And I lift my hands and pray to be only Yours
I pray to be only Yours
I know now You’re my only hope

Bridge

I give You my apathy
I’m giving You all of me
I want Your symphony
Singing in all that I am
At the top of my lungs I’m giving it back

Chorus 2

I lay my head back down
And I lift my hands and pray to be only Yours
I pray to be only Yours
I know now You’re my only hope

From Psalm 51

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.
You are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment.

You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.

Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.

The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

But now thus says the Lord,

The one who created you and formed you.
The one who shapes you and loves you
The God of our ancestors and all generations

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.

“For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.
I have chosen to make you my child.
I have given up pride and power for your sake.
Because you are precious in my sight,
I honor you and I love you.

“So do not fear, for I am with you;
I will gather my children from the ends of the earth—
every one called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
whom I formed and made.”

-Homiletics, adapted.

Too often we live comfortably with injustice.

We pursue our own self-interests,
blinded to the sufferings of others.

We give up when we should persevere.
We fail in our efforts for community.
We often act from motives other than love.

Yet, God has mercy upon us
and continues to transform us by grace
into faithful and loving disciples.

God is able to take our pride
and self-centered ambition
and transforms us
into humble and generous servants
to the last, the lost, the least.

May we live lives of gratitude
that God makes, and remakes, us
into loving neighbors
to each other and
to all people.

Lord, give us the grace of your perspective. Let us see that we have been given so much more than we could ever use. Show us the joy of giving, of serving and of letting go of our plenty and our pride to meet the needs of others. And if we find ourselves in a time of need, teach us the joy that comes from being cared for by people around us. Whether in plenty or in want, teach us to bless your name so your light may shine through us to all the world. Amen.

-including prayers written by Peter K. Perry

Loving God,
whose touch can heal the broken places of life,
touch us today…

God of peace,
whose spirit of peace can quiet our spirits
of confusion and despair,
reassure us today…

Forgiving God,
whose call to repentance promises grace upon grace,
place your mercy in our souls.

You who heal the sick and liberate the imprisoned,
who bring justice in the midst of oppression
and strength in the midst of weakness,
pour out your spirit of power upon us.

Open our hearts to new faithfulness,
redirect our waywardness,
and hold us gently in your goodness.

We confess our need to you,
and we turn to you with hearts filled with hope,
remembering the promises you have made to us.

Bring healing to broken hearts and bodies.
Expose our sinfulness and give us courage to turn to new ways.
Help us to find our place, sharing in your kingdom of love.
Make us neighbors to each other, living and praying as Jesus taught us:

‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever.
Amen.
