Good morning!  This page is intended to both serve as a continuing worship option for those participating in our worship service from home, and to serve in place of print resources during our in-person worship.  Following the worship service on Sunday, one or more video recordings from the service will be placed on this page, including the sermon.  This may take several hours, due to the time needed to process the videos.  We will email the congregation when the recordings have been posted.  If you would like to be added to our congregational email list, please contact pvcob.alive@gmail.com.

Notes and Reminder

The BackPack Pals program is in need of Pudding Cups and Ramen noodles. If you would like to make a donation, please leave items in the BackPack Pals bin located in the narthex.

Pastor Daniel and Pastor Rebecca will be on vacation February 15th-21st. We are looking forward to welcoming Grant Gonino to join us on Sunday, February 21st!

As a part of our worship service on February 14, we will have a minimal Congregational Business Meeting, in accordance with our church by-laws. There will be no business presented that will require a congregational vote. We will hear reports and celebrations for the work God continued to do among us last year, and pray for the ministries of the coming year.

The Shenandoah District February Disaster Ministries trip to Coastal, North Carolina has been canceled.  The next trip will be to Dayton, Ohio in April.

The 2021 Church directory is being finalized. If you have updates for the directory, please submit them to the church office by February 15. Updates can be emailed to office@pleasantvalleyalive.

Please remember in your prayers the many in and around our congregation who have been fighting illness.

Sing to the Lord, praise the God’s holy name.

For God’s anger lasts only a moment,
but God’s faithfulness is forever.

We may weep in the night,
but joy will come in the morning.

You turn wailing into dancing;

You replace sackcloth and clothe us with joy,

May our hearts sing to you and not be silent.
O Lord our God, We give you thanks forever!

My Story

Verse 1

If I told you my story
You would hear hope, that wouldn’t let go
And if I told you my story
You would hear love that never gave up
And if I told you my story
You would hear life, but it wasn’t mine

Chorus

If I should speak, then let it be of the grace
That is greater than all my sin
Of when justice was served, and where mercy wins!
Of the kindness of Jesus, that draws me in
Oh to tell you my story, is to tell of Him

Verse 2

If I told you my story, you would hear victory
Over the enemy
And if I told you my story, you would hear freedom
That was won for me
And if I told you my story, you would hear life
Overcome the grave

Chorus

If I should speak, then let it be of the grace
That is greater than all my sin
Of when justice was served, and where mercy wins!
Of the kindness of Jesus, that draws me in
Oh to tell you my story, is to tell of Him

Verse 3

This is my story, this is my song
Praising my savior, all the day long
This is my story, this is my song
Praising my savior, all the day long

INVOCATION

God of all Creation
You bless us to to know what it is to love
to explore what it is to care
to experience what it is to grow.
As we gather this morning
We celebrate your nurture;
You who have claimed us as children of your own heart.
So send your spirit among us this morning
to make us ever more fully your own:
a people of your grace
redeemed by your love
and transformed by your care.
In Jesus name, Amen.

Acts 9:10-19 NRSV

Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, ‘Ananias.’ He answered, ‘Here I am, Lord.’ The Lord said to him, ‘Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.’ But Ananias answered, ‘Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem; and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name.’ But the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel; I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.’ So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and his sight was restored. Then he got up and was baptized,

There is a Balm in Gilead

Chorus

There is a balm in Gilead
To make the wounded whole
There is a balm in Gilead
To heal the sin-sick soul!

Verse 1

Sometimes I feel discouraged
and think my works in vain,
but then, the Holy Spirit
revives my soul again!

Chorus

There is a balm in Gilead
To make the wounded whole
There is a balm in Gilead
To heal the sin-sick soul!

Chorus

There is a balm in Gilead
To make the wounded whole
There is a balm in Gilead
To heal the sin-sick soul!

To heal the sin-sick soul!

Psalm 30 NIV

I will exalt you, O LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths
And did not let my enemies gloat over me.
I called to you for help and you healed me.
You brought me up from the grave;
You spared me from going down into the pit.

Sing to the LORD, praise his holy name.
For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

When I felt secure, I said, “I will never be shaken.”
O LORD, when you favored me, you made my mountain stand firm;
but when you hid your face, I was dismayed.
To you, O LORD, I called; to the Lord I cried for mercy:
“What gain is there in my destruction, in my going down into the pit?
Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness?
Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me; O LORD, be my help.”

You turned my wailing into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
that my heart may sing to you and not be silent.
O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever.

Psalm 30 was written for celebration. Whether it was written for the dedication of the temple or David’s palace, it was a time of joy and beauty. But the Psalm also reminds us that before there was joy, there was trial. “O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me. O Lord, you brought up my soul from Sheol, restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit.” (vv. 2-3) Though we often read Psalms in personal devotion, we are invited to remember they were collected for singing by the congregation. And whenever two or three are gathered, there is opportunity to experience discord as well as God’s presence. This was certainly true of David’s experience, whether it was with Saul, with his own officers and friends, or even with his own sons.

So it is good, whenever we gather to worship God, to pray for healing, cleansing, and renewal by God’s spirit, not only in our own bodies, but also in the body of the church gathered. We come as people in need of healing and grace. It is in Christ that we are joined together!

Inspired by Isaiah 40: 27-31
. . . . . . .

You lift us up to the heights, Holy One.
On wings like eagles you enable us to
soar with the possibilities
of revolution, of transformation
both within our own souls
and within this world which needs so much care.

And yet it is not the bright skies
where we most often live.
We are here with our feet on the ground—
your feet planted firmly beside us
as we try to walk without fainting:
walk through the shadows of
death and ill-health and addiction;
walk through life changes:
moves, births, aging, loss.

We need your strength to not grow weary
as we continue to hope for new life
amidst old attitudes and injuries.
We long to run and not grow faint
as we challenge demeaning political tirades
that seep into our own daily encounters;
and as we work for your compassion and wholeness
for all people, and all creatures, and the very earth.

Lift us up to the heights, Holy One,
so we may again catch a glimpse
of the vast possibilities
of your Shalom
even as we pray for it here on earth
by saying:

 Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Healer of Our Every Ill

Healer of our every ill,
light of each tomorrow,
give us peace beyond our fear,
and hope beyond our sorrow!

Give us strength to love each other,
every sister, every brother;
Spirit of all kindness, be our guide.

Healer of our every ill,
light of each tomorrow,
give us peace beyond our fear,
and hope beyond our sorrow!

You who know each thought and feeling,
teach us all your way of healing;
Spirit of compassion, fill each heart.

Healer of our every ill,
light of each tomorrow,
give us peace beyond our fear,
and hope beyond our sorrow!

God of grace and love, we celebrate you today! With every glory of the season, with every opening flower, with every rising sun, the world sings your praise. Open our eyes to see the wonders of your creation. Open our hearts to receive the joy of your presence. Open us to new breath and life in Christ.

Help us to find that new life together. Do not let us be rent by our own pride and selfishness. Free us to receive healing and forgiveness from each other. Give us courage and humility to be bound together in grace rather than divided by distrust and fear. Send your love and order our hearts as we become your holy body, glorifying you. Amen.

Go today, held in God’s care.
Seek tomorrow, shaped by Christ’s compassion.
Receive eternal blessing and be led by the Holy Spirit of love. Amen.
