Older Children’s
Bulletin

Good morning!  This page is intended to both serve as a continuing worship option for those participating in our worship service from home, and to serve in place of print resources during our in-person worship.  Following the worship service on Sunday, one or more video recordings from the service will be placed on this page, including the sermon.  This may take several hours, due to the time needed to process the videos.  We will email the congregation when the recordings have been posted.  If you would like to be added to our congregational email list, please contact pvcob.alive@gmail.com.

  • Please note these highlights from the July Church Board Meeting:
    1. We will continue worshiping outdoors through Worship in the Grove, on September 13.
    2. We will not be accepting reservations for use of the church building or pavilion during this time, due to sanitation concerns.
  • The Church Board will be meeting in the pavilion tonight (August 9) at 6:30PM.
  • In March we began collecting materials for assembling CWS School Kits for children in times and places of severe need. We paused that collection in March because of uncertainty how to handle the risk of possible spread of contagion. In the past few weeks, Teri Sumey has worked to catalogue what we collected, and to determine what else is needed to complete our goal of donating 100 School Kits. We would like to try to complete these kits now. We need the following items:
    23 Erasers
    26 Boxes of 24 Crayons
    48 Scissors
    288 Pencils
We will have some plastic bins with our offering boxes on Sunday morning. You are invited to place School Kit donations in these bins. Any extra donations will be saved for our next School Kit drive. Thank you for your sharing of Christ’s love!
  • One of Pleasant Valley’s three main goals for 2020 is to implement LIFE groups
    in which we:
    Lean on Jesus as we
    Ignite faithful discipleship,
    Fellowship in love, and
    Encourage Christian growth.
We would like to begin implementing LIFE groups this fall and need input from each individual in your family.
Even if you may not be interested in participating right now, we would appreciate your input for future planning.
Please click on this LIFE GROUP SURVEY link.
This will take you to a short, 7-question, online survey that will help us decide how to proceed. This should not take any more than a few minutes to fill out.
    Please respond ASAP.
THANK YOU for your contribution to Growing Together In Christ’s Spirit!

Tuning In

This week I heard a radio story talking about the old crystal set radios. I remember building one of these radios as a kid, using a circuit board meant to teach children about electronics. I never did learn that much, but did follow the plan for creating the radio, and was entranced by how moving the antenna to different locations on the crystal allowed it to tune into different frequencies.

I found myself remembering this earlier this week, when I was finding myself a little too stressed about our contemporary situation, figuring out how to navigate the seasonal changes of life in the middle of a pandemic. I realized that I needed to take a step back, and pause to pray that God would help me to refocus. And that is when the question came to me. “What are you tuning into?”

I would invite us all to ask that question right now. The ways in which we position ourselves, in which we locate our antennas, turn our heads, steer our computer screens, and adjust our television sets are all impacting what we are experiencing at the moment. The voices pouring through air and wires enter our heads and echo in a ceaseless cacophony.

But God is inviting us to tune in a different way right now. God is inviting us to turn away from the chaos and stress of everyday life, to focus on him and receive the clear word that is nourishment and rest for our souls. Let’s open our hearts to God now, let go of the noise that has filled our week, and find our peace in God.

Based on Psalm 105:1-8

One: Give thanks to the Lord;
call on His name;
make His deeds known to all the people!

All: For He is the Lord, our God,
faithful to a thousand generations!

One: Sing His praises;
tell of His wonderful works,
and glory in His holy name!
Let those who seek the Lord rejoice!

All: For He is the Lord, our God,
faithful to a thousand generations!

One: Search for God, and for His strength.
Never stop looking for Him.

All: For He is the Lord, our God,
mindful of his covenant forever,
faithful to a thousand generations!

Gathering Prayer

Holy and Almighty God,
Lord of sun and rain,
Creator of towering oaks and scurrying ants,
We pause before you now
praying that you would make us able to see.
Make us able to see, not only the things we worry about.
Make us able to see, not only what this world frantically points towards.
Make us able to see, more.
Open our eyes to your faithfulness, O God.
Open our hearts to the love of neighbors.
Open our ears to the beauty of frogs and crickets.
Open our spirits to your nurturing care.
Remind us that you have given yourself for us.
Remind us that in your sacrifice, we are your beloved children,
The sheep of your fold,
Blessed by you in love, forever.
Amen.

(Repeat 3x)

God, my Savior!
God, my Healer!
God, my Deliverer!
Yes, He is! Yes, He is!

Every praise is to our God.
Every word of worship with one accord.
Every praise, every praise is to our God.
Sing hallelujah to our God.

Every praise, every praise,
Every praise, every praise,
Every praise, every praise,
is to our God!

Romans 10:5-15

Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that ‘the person who does these things will live by them.’ But the righteousness that comes from faith says, ‘Do not say in your heart, “Who will ascend into heaven?” ’ (that is, to bring Christ down) ‘or “Who will descend into the abyss?” ’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say?
‘The word is near you,
on your lips and in your heart’
(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, ‘No one who believes in him will be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’

Joyful, Joyful, We Adore You

Joyful, joyful, we adore You,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flow’rs before You,
Op’ning to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround You,
Earth and heav’n reflect Your rays,
Stars and angels sing around You,
Center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,
Singing bird and flowing fountain
Call us to rejoice in You.

You art giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Wellspring of the joy of living,
Ocean depth of happy rest!

You our Father, Christ our Brother,
All who live in love are Yours;
Teach us how to love each other,
Lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the mighty chorus,
Which the morning stars began;
Love divine is reigning o’er us,
Leading us with mercy’s hand.

Ever singing, march we onward,
Victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music lifts us sunward
In the triumph song of life.

Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

by David Tate, Jeremiah Padilla | Streamed with permission. CSPL121366

One: Who are you?
All: The children of a loving God.
One: Feed my Sheep.

One: What are you?
All: Disciples of a forgiving and healing Lord.
One: Feed my Sheep.

One: Where are you?
All: Gathered together in worship,
working hard in our workplaces and homes,
resting quietly in our beds.
One: Feed my sheep.

One:I am the good shepherd.
I gather you in,
give you rest in green pastures,
lead you beside still waters.
Now, I send you out.
Go, and share the good news
of my love with those around you.
Feed my sheep.
All: Amen.

Thank you for your sharing of God’s love.

In Prayer Together

Lord of loving healing
You who have called us your own
Who has washed our feet
Endured our lashes
And returned to bring us new life,
We pray for your children today.

We pray for those who have lost loved ones
asking that they with be surrounded with more love.

We pray for those who are stressed and worn out
asking that they will be given strength and rest.

We pray for those who feel like they have lost their way
asking that they will understand
that even when they do not know where to go
You are still coming to them.

We pray for ourselves, O God,
confessing our own weaknesses:
pride, stubbornness, fear,
insecurity, weariness, lack of compassion.

Pour out your healing upon us.
Catch us when we take our eyes off of you.
Save us from the waves that threaten to drown
Especially the waves driven by the storms of our own spirits.

Lead us into new pastures,
out of the ones crafted by our own imagining,
into the ones planted and nurtured by your grace.

Guide us into the new life of your sharing.
Help us to follow in your way,
trusting in your provision and your caring,
So we all may stand before your throne, together. Amen.

Oceans

You call me out upon the waters,
The great unknown where feet may fail.
And there I find You in the mystery.
In oceans deep, my faith will stand.

Chorus
And I will call upon Your name,
And keep my eyes above the waves.
When oceans rise,
My soul will rest in Your embrace.
For I am Yours and You are mine.

Your grace abounds in deepest waters.
Your sov’reign hand will be my guide.
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me,
You’ve never failed and You won’t start now.

Chorus

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders.
Let me walk upon the waters,
Wherever You would call me.
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Saviour.

(Repeat 3x)

I will call upon Your name.
Keep my eyes above the waves.
My soul will rest in Your embrace.
I am Yours and You are mine.

Like for the flowers of the field,

Like for the birds of the air,

Like for sheep of his pasture,

God watches over and provides.

Go, trusting in God’s loving care.  Amen
