Older Children’s
Bulletin

Good morning!  This page is intended to both serve as a continuing worship option for those participating in our worship service from home, and to serve in place of print resources during our in-person worship.  Following the worship service on Sunday, one or more video recordings from the service will be placed on this page, including the sermon.  This may take several hours, due to the time needed to process the videos.  We will email the congregation when the recordings have been posted.  If you would like to be added to our congregational email list, please contact pvcob.alive@gmail.com.

  • Please note these highlights from the July Church Board Meeting:
    1. We will continue worshiping outdoors through September 13.
    2. We will not be accepting reservations for use of the church building or pavilion during this time, due to sanitation concerns.

  • The Church Board will be have a called meeting on August 30 at 6:30PM in the pavilion.  We will be working on plans for resuming worship inside the church building

  • Cave View Farm has Sunflowers available for picking on Westview School Rd.  Please pick some to share with someone else!

  • Please be praying for educators, students, and parents preparing for the new school year.

  • Please be praying for those suffering from Covid-19, and those caring for them.

Be Still

I was in the market for a new pair of sandals. A quick Internet search led to many sites that offered the particular brand I wanted. One site caught my attention as the sandals were 40 percent cheaper than anyplace else! I soon learned they were a knockoff brand, meaning they looked like the genuine brand in every way but were an imitation. I was glad I checked before purchasing them.

What would distinguish genuine love from a knockoff version? Both the Old and New Testaments instruct us to love God and to love our neighbor. We reach out to others in the same spirit that God extends love to us. Jesus exemplified that love in his earthly ministry. He loved the people that others found hard to love – people who were ill, lonely, lost, and rejected. Paul gave us a good definition of genuine love in 1 Corinthians 13, a familiar passage on the topic of love. Paul’s words show us that love is not about me, but reaches out in unselfish ways to people around me.

During a difficult time, my family received a card from a church member with a handwritten message that lifted our spirits and reminded us that God was watching over us. I later learned that this woman sent out cards each week to people on our prayer list. She could not read or write, so she took the cards to the post office and the employees there wrote her messages. This was genuine love!

Today our world is full of hate and violence. You find it in our schools, our malls and grocery stores, and even in our houses of worship. It may not be physical violence, but it’s potent and powerful, nonetheless. Imagine the impact believers can have by reaching out into a darkened world with genuine love.

From the “Living Word” series of bulletin covers

Holy Lord, you know us by name,
You know our victories and our sorrows
You know our hopes and our fears.

So we greet you this morning,
knowing that you are ready to receive us,
and we are thankful that you call us your children.

We offer ourselves to you this morning,
seeking to know the renewal of your grace,
seeking the power of your love alive in us,
remembering that our greatest victory is assured in Jesus.

Shape us, by the power of your word.
And bring that word to life in us
that we may offer a worship, a living, a celebration,
that honors you.
In Jesus we pray, Amen.

More than Conquerors

When my hope and strength is gone
You’re the one who calls me on.
You are the life,
You are the fight
That’s in my soul.
Oh, your resurrection power
Burns like fire in my heart.
When waters rise
I lift my eyes
Up to Your throne.

Chorus:

We are more than conquerors,
through Christ!
You have overcome this world, this life!
We will not bow to sin or to shame.
We are defiant in your name.
You are the fire that cannot be tamed.
You are the power in our veins,
Our Lord, our God, our Conqueror.

I will sing into the night
Christ is risen and on high.
Greater is He,
Living in me,
Than in the world.
No surrender, no retreat,
We are free and we’re redeemed.
We will declare
Over despair
You are the hope.

Chorus

Bridge: (x2)

Nothing is impossible.
Every chain is breakable.
With You, we are victorious.
You are stronger than our hearts.
You are greater than the dark.
With You, we are victorious.

Chorus

More than Conquerors

Romans 12:9-21

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ No, ‘if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Live Like That

Verse 1
Sometimes I think
What will people say of me
When I’m only just a memory
When I’m home where my soul belongs
Was I love
When no one else would show up
Was I Jesus to the least of us
Was my worship more than just a song

Chorus
I wanna live like that
And give it all I have
So that everything I say and do
Points to You
If love is who I am
Then this is where I’ll stand
Recklessly abandoned
Never holding back
I wanna live like that
I wanna live like that

Verse 2
Am I proof
That You are who You say You are
That grace can really change a heart
Do I live like Your love is true
People pass
And even if they don’t know my name
Is there evidence that I’ve been changed
When they see me do they see You

Bridge
I wanna show the world the love You gave for me
(I wanna live like that)
I’m longing for the world to know
The glory of the King

I wanna live like that

Call to Prayer
We do not love with a perfect love.
But we believe that God’s loving grace is sufficient for all things;
Sufficient for all sinners, including us.
So we do not wallow in our sin, but lift our voices to God,
Seeking and praying to grow in love.
Let us pray together.

Unison Prayer

Lord of all mercy,
we are not perfect, but we trust in you
to give us enough grace and understanding
that we may celebrate love shining today.
Lead us in the paths of righteousness and teach us to delight in your ways.
Turn our hearts to your words and our daily living to your compassion.
Give love life within us,
So all may discover life in you. Amen.

The sharing of God’s love takes many forms. It takes the form of food shared with a stranger. It takes the form of a listening ear, and a patient presence. It takes the form of a hard day’s labor and sore backs. It takes the form of persistent prayers, offered when only God can hear.

Thank you for your part in God’s continuing ministry. Thank you for sharing your love.

In Prayer Together

Holy God,
in the whisper of the wind, we hear your dreams for us;
in the quietly rustling grass, we hear stirrings of your grace;
in the chirping of a summer night, we hear your joy;
and in the cries of the hurting we hear your call to lives of compassion.

Jesus, as you overcome our obsession with our selves, our desires,
     gift us to serve others;
as you simplify our souls with the grace of your good news,
     make us wise enough to live it;
as you enchant our hopes with the wonder of your love,
     break our hearts so we might join hands with those around us.

Holy Spirit,
if we are to suffer together, may we drink deeply from your tender tears;
if we are to rejoice together, may we taste the strength of your hope and peace;
if we are to pray together, may we feast on your love;
if we are to worship together,
may we join in listening to that Word which will transform us forever.

We offer ourselves to you today, and all those on our hearts.
Bind us together. Knit us into a body that leaves none behind.
Strengthen us to love and serve.
Cleanse us of everything that divides and separates us from your new life
And guide us together into the communion where all are made whole.

In the name of the one who gave his own body, that we might become a part of it,
Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.

Holy Spirit, Come with Power

Holy Spirit, come with power,
breathe into our aching night.
We expect you this glad hour,
waiting for your strength and light.
We are fearful, we are ailing,
we are weak and selfish too.
Break upon your congregation,
give us vigor, life anew.

Holy Spirit, come with fire,
burn us with your presence new.
Let us as one mighty choir
sing our hymn of praise to you.
Burn away our wasted sadness
and enflame us with your love.
Burst upon your congregation,
give us gladness from above.

Holy Spirit, bring your message,
burn and breathe each word anew
deep into our tired living
till we strive your work to do.
Teach us love and trusting kindness,
lend our hands to those who hurt.
Breathe upon your congregation
and inspire us with your word.
